My name Yanique Harris. I am 20 years old. My ambition was to become a registered nurse, but because of financial difficulties I switched to a medical assistant program.
Why did you choose medical assisting?
I chose medical assisting because I felt like it gives you a lot of experience and you can build from there. I was taking the prerequisites for nursing at Queensborough College, then I realized that I could not afford the classes. I switched to the medical assistant certificate program.
What did you like and not like about your medical assistant program?
The certificate program takes only 1 year and my favorite part was taking field experience classes. The only thing I did not like about the program is that most of the classes were only offered in the evening or in the night.
What type of job did you get after completion? How much does it pay?
I am still enrolled in the program. I will be graduating at the end of the fall semester. However, I met some people at my field experience and they are currently earning 12.50 per hour.
How much did your medical assistant program cost?
The medical assistant program cost me approximately $4,500. I had to pay for this from my pocket. The school made this easier for me because they had a tuition payment plan.
Do you have any advice for people interested in medical assisting?
My advice for students regarding paying for this program is try to get financial aid. I am currently doing internship at a doctors office and I love it I pray that they will hire me after I am finished. This job requires the ability to multi-task. You have be focused and fast.
